WeChat Pay and Alipay will release version for foreign tourists
Tourists traveling to China will soon solve the problem of cashless payments. There are few places in the country where foreign Visa or Mastercard cards are accepted, which somewhat complicates the life of vacationers..
Today, there are two major payment platforms in the country. Chinese tech giant Tencent operates WeChat Pay and Alibaba owns the Alipay platform.
but users could not use the aforementioned services if they did not have a Chinese bank account.
On the eve of Ant Financial announced that it is launching a version of the Alipay app that will support international debit or credit cards. After downloading Alipay on Android from Google, users can register for the international version of the application using their foreign mobile phone number.
Users can then top up their virtual card account and start using Alipay all over China. Ant Financial announced that the application will support Visa, Mastercard, Japan’s JCB and Singapore Diners Club.
Tencent said it would also support foreign cardholders on WeChat Pay.
Millions of tourists come to China every year. In 2018, a total of 141 million people visited China, which is 1.2% more than a year earlier..
This is the first time that WeChat Pay and Alipay will be available to international users.
Previously, both companies worked to get entrepreneurs overseas to accept Chinese payment methods.. However, it has not yet been able to launch versions of its apps for users based outside of mainland China and Hong Kong..
